As salaam alaikum wr wb,
My wife is looking to join a yoga class in order to exercise and stay in shape. These classes are women only, lead by Muslims in a Muslim gym. However we have heard that Yoga is not halal due to its ties to Hindu traditions and worship, e.g. some of the names of the yoga poses/stretches are problematic and translate to worshiping the sun. So before signing up for this, she wanted to check and make sure it's halal.

According to the research of contemporary scholars, yoga is a permanent non-Islamic form of worship, so it is not permissible to engage in Yoga exercises.

Select an exercise venue suitable for Muslim women, where rules of Shari’ah are observed.
Gyms in general involve many non-Sharia issues for example, semi-naked and non-shariah compliant clothing which motivate and inspire disallowed gazes and obscenity, sound of music, songs and at times dance through certain exercise patterns.
Due to these and other non-Sharia issues it is important to avoid such places of exercise.
